A Visit to Reflect, Learn, and Inspire

On Friday, 3rd of October 2025, the International Center for Environmental Health and Development (ICEHD) had the honor of hosting representatives from the African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF) for an interactive engagement session highlighting the progress and impact of our women-led agricultural resilience initiatives in Nigeria.

The session at our Lagos office was vibrant and reflective, filled with storytelling and deep discussions around our feminist journey, gender policy advocacy, and the real-life experiences of rural women farmers who are leading the frontlines of climate action.

This dialogue formed part of AWDF’s broader efforts to document impact stories of gender equality projects being carried out across the Global South, and to advocate for continued funding for gender equality–focused initiatives.

From Conversations to Community: Field Visit to Ikorodu

Following the office discussions, the AWDF team joined ICEHD on a field visit to Ikorodu, one of our key project communities.
There, they met several women farmers who have been part of the ICEHD empowerment program since 2023.

The visit offered a firsthand look at the tangible outcomes of our project, from organic composting units to boreholes for irrigation farming, and the use of eco-friendly insecticides for sustainable food production.

The women shared how these interventions have improved their crop yields, increased income, and enhanced their climate resilience. Many expressed gratitude for how the project has transformed their farms and livelihoods, helping them produce more efficiently and sustainably throughout changing weather patterns.

Empowering Women, Strengthening Communities

Today, women farmers make up nearly 70% of Nigeria’s agricultural workforce, yet remain underrepresented in agricultural decision-making.
Through our partnership with AWDF, ICEHD continues to challenge that imbalance, empowering women not just as farmers, but as leaders, educators, and policy advocates in sustainable agriculture and climate action.

This visit reaffirmed the shared commitment between AWDF and ICEHD to amplify women’s leadership, strengthen feminist movements, and promote inclusive climate solutions that ensure no woman is left behind.

Looking Ahead

As we advance into the next phase of the Grassroots-Driven Climate Action by Rural Women Farmers in Nigeria project, ICEHD remains committed to scaling impact, deepening advocacy, and driving policy reforms that secure a more equitable and resilient agricultural future for women across Nigeria and the Global South.

Together with AWDF, we are not only growing food; we are growing equality, resilience, and hope.
