World Food Day 2024 Webinar: Food Justice in Africa

In commemoration of the World Food Day 2024, International Centre for Environmental Health (ICEHD) partnered with COGNITO to hold a webinar themed- "Food Justice: Taking Action for Diversified, Safe, Affordable, and Accessible Food in Africa." The event which will be held on the 17th of October 2024 seeks to address the pressing issues of food insecurity and hunger in Africa.

 

Other partners and facilitators for the event included representatives from the Nutrition Department, Federal Ministry of Health, Nigeria, the World Food Program, Nigeria Country Office, School Feeding Program, UK, and Save the Children.

Data from the field indicates that despite the local, national and international policies on the right to food and the efforts at food security, around 733 million people faced hunger in 2023, equivalent to one in eleven people globally, with Africa bearing the brunt of food insecurity as one in five in Africa currently face hunger, according to the latest State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) report published on the 24th of July 2024, by five United Nations specialized agencies.

 

The 2024 Global Report on Food Crises (GRFC), published recently by the Food Security Information Network (FSIN) revealed that 24.9 million people are affected by high food insecurity in Nigeria, and the country ranks second among the 59 countries listed as having over 281.6 million people who face acute food insecurity globally.

 

Objectives of the event include:

  1. To understand the African food justice system: Examine the challenges, solutions, and opportunities within the African food landscape.
  2. To identify best practices: Highlight successful initiatives and the realities of addressing food justice across the continent.
  3. To explore practical actions: Discuss actionable strategies to improve the diversity, safety, affordability, and accessibility of food in Africa.
